Who is a Good Candidate for Using an IUD?
Not all birth control methods are created equally and not all are effective for different people. You should consider a number of factors before making a final decision about birth control.
One of the most popular methods available is the IUD. This is a device that is inserted into the uterus. It makes the body inhospitable to pregnancy and can also provide additional non-pregnancy benefits. It is effective and long lasting, but there are still many women who are uncomfortable with using an IUD and there are women who are just not good candidates for this method. How do you know if you are a good candidate for IUD use?
You do not intend to get pregnant for many years. Though it is possible to remove your IUD after it has been inserted, it is not the most pleasant process. Hormonal IUDs also require several months of adjustment for some women, so it can be extremely stressful to insert and remove your IUD in a short time. IUDs are good for anywhere from five to 10 years, so if you are looking for a method that is long term, you are a good candidate for an IUD.
You are not sensitive to hormonal fluctuations. This is important if you are considering the type of IUD that releases progestin into the body. Many women find they are unable to deal with the fluctuation in hormones this type of device causes. It also creates a number of side effects that can be difficult to cope with. If you know hormone fluctuations put you
in pain or create emotional or physical distress, this type of IUD is probably not a good choice.
You are not allergic to copper. The second type of IUD releases copper into the body, instead of progestin. Copper causes inflammation and attracts white blood cells to the reproductive organs, which in turn attack sperm. This is an effective method of birth control, but it does not work for women who have a copper allergy.
You have had children. Though there are doctors who recommend IUDs for women who have never given birth, most find that the IUD works better for women who have delivered a baby vaginally. The risk of the uterus expelling the IUD is higher for women who have never been pregnant. It is also a good idea to wait a bit after having a child to insert the IUD. If inserted too soon, the same expelling problem can occur.
